The Naira yesterday appreciated to N1,550 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,560 per dollar on Wednesday. Similarly, the Naira appreciated N1,554.55 per dollar in the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market, NAFEM. Data from FMDQ showed that the indicative exchange rate for NAFEM fell to N1,554.55 per dollar from N1,561.98 per dollar on Wednesday, indicating N7.43 appreciation for the naira. The volume of dollars (turnover) traded on the window rose by 47.4 per cent to $348.82 million from $236.7 million traded on Wednesday. Yesterday’s talks between President Bola Tinubu and the Organised Labour on minimum wage were adjourned until next week. The Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage had recently submitted two figures to the President as the organised private sector and the government team offered to pay N62,000, while the Organised Labour demanded N250,000. Following the disagreement on the figures, the President had delayed sending any figure to the National Assembly through the Executive Bill to consult with all the relevant stakeholders in order to resolve all the contentious issues. A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman be remanded in Kuje prison in Abuja pending the consideration of his bail application. Justice James Omotosho issued the order on Thursday, July 11, after Mamman was arraigned on a 12-count charge bordering on money laundering offences. He pleaded not guilty to the charge brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), following which the prosecuting lawyer, Olumide Fusika (SAN) sought a date for the commencement of trial. The Supreme Court, on Thursday, ( 11, July 2024) declared that it is unconstitutional for state governors to hold onto funds meant for Local Government (LG) administrations. In its lead judgement read by Justice Emmanuel Agim, the apex court observed that the refusal of state government on financial autonomy for local governments has gone on for over two decades. He said local governments has since stopped receiving the money meant for them from the state governors who act in their stead.
