The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the upgrades of two forest reserves in Bayelsa State- Apoi and Edumanom in Southern Ijaw and Ogbia Local Government Areas to National Parks.
This was disclosed as Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri received the Conservator-General of Nigeria, Dr. Ibrahim Musa Goni, at his office, in Government House, Yenagoa.
Governor Diri who was joined by the Deputy Governor, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, appreciated President Bola Tinubu for the approval aim at preserving the environment.
“We are happy as a State that at the end of this long journey, we have two of our forests that have been recognised and upgraded to National Parks.
So, we want to thank the President of the Federal Republic and all those who have made it possible. From the history before me, the journey has been a long one but today it is a reality that we have two National Parks in Bayelsa, one in Apoi and the other being Edumanom located between Ogbia and Nembe.
Your visit today again, gives us hope with the good news that our environment is already endangered receiving some attention from the Federal Government of Nigeria,” Governor Diri stated
On his part, Dr. Ibrahim presented two operational Hilux vehicles to the State Government for Edumanom and Apoi, stating that 100 young Bayelsans will be engaged to oversee the Parks.
